Your insurance will be verified prior to your appointment by our staff, however this is not a guarantee of payment from your insurance company. Of course this will differ per patient depending on their health, but for the most part you can expect the following: possibly additional diagnostic studies, a pre-assessment appointment as well as any additional clearances required dependent of your current health. Don’t worry, our staff makes your surgical experience as smooth and stress free as possible. We schedule these appointments for you and are here to make the process easy.
The pre-assessment is basically a history and physical to determine if you are healthy prior to any surgical procedure. At this appointment you will also be informed of any medications you should stop prior to surgery as well as where to arrive for your surgery, what to bring, etc. Some patient’s may require additional specialist clearances (ex. pulmonology or cardiology) prior to surgery if they have a history of heart disease, COPD, or any other heart or lung condition.
The length of your surgical procedure is dependent on many factors such as the type of surgery being preformed, your general health, whether or not you have had previous surgery, etc. Some surgeries are considered outpatient procedures which means you will be discharged a few hours after your surgery while other surgeries may require you to stay in the hospital for a few days. Surgery time and hospital stay will be explained in detail at your office visit and when scheduling surgery.
Upon leaving the hospital you will be given discharge instructions informing you of what you should and shouldn’t be doing during your recovery period. This differs per patient depending on what surgical procedure was performed. A post-operative appointment will be scheduled for 4 weeks after surgery. Should you have any questions during your post-op period please call our office. During this conversation the nurse will be happy to answer any concerns or questions you may have. A post-operative appointment will also be scheduled at this time. Post-operative appointments are normally scheduled three weeks from the date of surgery and depending on the surgery you may be required to have X-rays taken in our office the same day.
It is very important to keep the incision clean and dry at all times. You can use a mild soap to clean the area and pat dry. Never rub the incision site. It is not recommended to use antibiotic ointment on the incision. We use dissolvable sutures so there is no need to have sutures removed. Please do not immerse incision in standing water until after your first post-operative visit and the approval from the nurse or physician. Should you have more questions about your incision, or you notice redness, swelling, and discharge from the area notify our office immediately.
This differs for every patient depending on the type of surgical procedure that was preformed, the patient’s type of work, how quickly the patient recovers, etc. On average you can expect to be off from work anywhere from 3-6 weeks. If work requires heavy labor/ intensive duties extra time is allotted during the post-operative period.
